Undoubtedly, using of airships is a controversial thing among aeronautical engineers. More specifically the writer puts forth on some ideas about benefits of using airships. However the professor points out that there are some serious flaws with the writer's claim. To be exact the professor believes that airships can not be that useable. He more or less addresses the problem with each point made in the reading.
To begin, the writer claims that airships can lift vertical without using of engins and this reduces the amount of fuel they use and makes them more economical rather than airplanes or helicopters. But the professor refutes with this idea and says that airships needs huge amount of lighter than air gases like hydrogen or hellium to lift up. Hydrogen catch fire easily and its not safe and hellium is very expensive, so running an aircraft safe have lots of costs.
Secondly, the reading states that airships can lift up and off vertically and carry huge loads at same time and they can be used in carring heavy logs from forests to distribution cemters. The professor, not surprisingly though, refutes with the idea and says that, airship are larg and light and can get blown easily by wind. In dense places like forests they can crash to trees and make disasters.
Finally, the author wraps up the topic by claiming that airships can can be used to replace the satellites. Since airships can rise high above surface and saty there for long time, they can carry telecommunications equipment to send and recieve signals. Then again, the professor stays on the other side of the argument and says that since there is strong winds at 15km above surface (where airships can reach the most) they need to use so much fuel to stay steady and this will make the to use up their fuel in very short time and they can't be used instead of satellites.
As we can see, the professor and the writer obviously hold opposing views about the topic.
