An airship is a type of aircraft that flies using a very large balloon filled with a lighter-than-air gas. Airships were an important means of air transportation before the 1940s but are little used today, having been largely replaced by airplanes and helicopters. However, some aeronautical engineers believe that airships could become popular again because they offer a number of advantages over airplanes and helicopters. One advantage of airships is that for vertical lift(the force that keeps the ship airborne),they use a balloon that floats rather than an engine. Airplanes and helicopters use engines for both vertical lift and horizontal movement, but airships use engines solely for horizontal movement. So,airships use less fuel than a typical aircraft-thus making their fuel costs more economical.
The passage states that airship has a some advantages that might help it to bacame popular again in the future. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes all the three aformentioned episods of argument.
First of all, the reading claims that airship is more economical than airplane and helicopters because it only uses fuel for horizontal movement. Nevertheless, this point is challenged by the professor. He says that airship needs lighter gas for vertical lift such as hydrogen and helium. The hydrogen caused a lot of tragic accident in the past so this is not a safe gas for use. Heluim is safe but can not provide power for vertical lifting. Therefore using airship is not easy and we should consider the need for these fuels.
Second, The reading posits that can be used to carry heavy logs in hard to reach locations. In contrast, the professor mentions that using airship for transporting cargo can be very hard because wind can make damage, and for carrying heavy cargo, airship has to left of with steady speed, which is hard because of wind.
Finally, the passage states that we can use airship rather than satellites because ariship can rise high enugh. However, the professor rebutted this point by arguing that airships are not ready for doing this task. in the hight of 14KM there are strong winds that airships have to spend a lot of fuel in order to stay in one location. Thus, the airship's fuel will be used up so fast and it has to come back.In sum, all the three reqasons mentioned in the reading efectivelly challenged by the lecture.
