In the reading passage, the author quotes three reasons to sell Amtrak to private company from many critics, which entirely contradicts the main idea of the lecturer.
First of all, according to the passage, the government loses money on many Amtrak routes due to underuse in many remote and less populated areas. Even if the speaker admits that there are some remote and less populated areas cause underuse problem to Amtrak, she still disagrees that those underused routes should be cut. Because the Amtrak is non-profit program and these people who live in the remote areas have as many rights for government service as others cites do.
Secondly, the reading passage indicates that it is unfair for government to invest the Amtrak instead of airline or other companies. However, the speaker totally reputes this point by saying that government did many investments by various ways to airline, such as provide the money for the airport building, training for officers and weather satellite, which all beneficial for airlines. Besides, the airlines can survive without government's funding.
Lastly, while the critics in the passage suggest that the government should invest highway system because more people own cars and they prefer to use cars than trains, the speaker in the lecture argues that this trend results from out of date train service. If the train is fast and convenient, there should be more people use it. For example, in Japan and Europe, the trains are popular because their high-speed and better service. Therefore, the speaker suggests that the government should invest more money in Amtrak to improve the service.
To sum up, the speaker in the lectures refutes all three reasons given in the passage that to sell Amtrak to private company. Instead, she asks for more money to improve the service of the train.
