In this reading, the author presents three beliefs about elephant behaviors, which all contradict the main idea of the professor in the lecture by saying that they are misunderstandings.
First of all, the author points out that elephants have the ability to know their approaching death because many elderly elephants' bodies are found near water sites. Nevertheless, the professor argues that when elephants get older, they need to find some soft vegetation to eat as their chewing ability decrease, these soft vegetation can be found near water. Thus, these older elephants will eventually die there.
Second, opposing to the idea provided by the author that elephants have the artistic ability by using a paintbrush and draw on the canvas, the professor put forward that elephants' painting ability is the result of human training by touching their sensitive ears. But this painting ability trained by humans does not represent that elephants know what exactly they are drawing.
Finally, the author indicates that elephants are afraid of mice according to a Roman scientist and recent scientific survey. By contrast, the professor points out that these results are misrepresenting. She says that the elephants avoid mice just due to they are unfamiliar with mice and it is a natural instinct of animals. Besides, the professor argues that elephants in the zoo do not have fear of mice, because they are close to mice and their familiarity shows that mice are not harmful to them.
