The author and lecturer are both talking about buying the franchise business. However, the professor claims that franchise business is not cheaper and easier to start own business and refutes that the main point made in the reading passage. The following three points of view between two parties are presented as followed.
First of all, the lecturer argues that franchising company force the owner to buy specific products which is overpriced. According to the speaker, she states that the franchise company probably have built reliable contract between suppliers of the goods and services however it could be a bit expensive. The owner could find cheaper products as same as one they receive from the parent company.
Second, the professor points out that the cost for advertisement is usually six percent of their gain so it is a lot. The parent company wants to advertise their company name to the market so not the name of products. She also mentioned that it would not be advantage for the owner directly. This point that the professor is addressing is in contradiction to what is indicated in the reading passage.
Lastly, the speaker agrees with the fact that starting an independent business is more risky. In contrast, she has shown third reason which is not showed in the reading passage. There is an independent business already existed so the owner might take that business instead of franchising one. According to the author in the reading passage, the failure rate for starting independent business is high compared to the franchises. However, the research has shown that buying existing business is tended to success two times more than franchising one first four years.
