According to the reading passage, it is stated that since the negatives, which are of landscape scenes of the western united states and dated from 1920s, have no indication of the name of their photographer, most people believe that they are took by Ansel Adams; and it provides the reasons to support this hypothesis. However, the lecturer refutes the assumptions made in the reading passage, and presents three solid reasons to challenge these proposals.
Firstly, the reading claims that those negatives contain images of landscape features like a large leaning pine tree that are known to be taken by Ansel Adams. The professor casts doubt on this point by saying that leaning tree is not a random tree. He states that tree was one of the famous landmarks in a park, which attracted most photographers who visited that site, and most of them took picture of it.
Secondly, the article posits that there is a mark of handwritten place names which resemble the handwritten of Virginia, Adams' wife, who is known to have assisted Ansel in his work. In contrast, the professor says that since Virginia Adams' father was a well-known photographer at the Usembles city, she knew there very well. Therefore, it is not likely for her to misspell that place's name.
Finally, the reading says that a number of negatives have been damaged by fire, leading to the assumption that they once belonged to Adams' photography studio, which had caught a fire. The professor disagrees, explaining that traditional photography studios used dangerous chemicals that could easily catch fire. According to him, not only Ansel Adams but also a great number of other photographers encountered such things. Therefore, those negatives can not be exclusive to Adams.
