The best way to start a new business is to buy a franchise.
The text and the lecture offer two opposing views about the pros and cons of buying a franchise. While the reading passage lists reasons to substantiate the benefits of buying a franchise, the professor refutes all the causes based on a recent study, and asserts that buying a franchise might not be the most appropriate option for one who wants to initiate a business.
First, the article claims that a franchise has not any difficulty to supply what other rivals would encounter difficulties with such as raw materials and equipment. On the contrary, the lecturer repudiates the given reason and argues that usually franchises are compelled to purchase special goods and services which the mother company dictates in the contract. The problem which arises is that such products are always more expensive than what other companies can buy from market. Thus, a prepared supply of basic elements would not be necessarily an advantage for a franchise.
Next, the passage posits that taking into account the well-established reputation of a franchise owner, a franchise is able to save a lot of money. In contrast, the professor explains that franchise owners normally take six percent of the franchise annual sales. In return, they provide advertisements that are not exclusively for that franchise, and help other sellers of that particular product as well, so the income of the franchise will be about one half of what he pledged to pay annually to the owner. Therefore, a franchise owner's reputation provides the franchise with a little benefit.
Finally, the author avers that a franchise is more secure than an independent starting business in early years. On the other hand, the lecturer rejects this idea by stating that there is a third choice for a starting business, and that is to buy an already independent company. According to the lecturer, studies manifest that in this case the company can earn twice as it can earn in the case of a franchise. Therefore, a franchise is not necessarily the most secure option for a starting business.
