burning mirror
The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in the topic of burning mirror. First of all, the reading says that ancient Greeks were not technologically advanced to make
burning mirror with a large sheet of copper. However, the listening argues that this evidence is incorrect. Ancients Greeks did not need to form a large sheet of copper in order to make a mirror. Flat pieces of copper had been found and it can form into a parabolic shape. As a result, evidence had shows that burning mirror is made by flat pieces of copper instead of a large sheet. Indeed, ancient Greeks had the ability to make burning mirror.
In addition, while the reading suggests that burning mirror would have taken a long time to set the ship on fire and the mirror cannot be move, the listening asserts that it is true that it might take a long time for wood to set on fire. But, the ships are made of different materials. For example, ancient Greeks had used a sticky material call pitch, which can set the ships on fire in a few seconds. Besides, pitch can also be set on fire even though the ships are moving. In other words, ancient Greeks had used some efficient ways to set the ships on fire while moving.
Last but not least the reading implies that burning mirror does not look like a effective weapon for Greeks to use. However, the listening argues that it is actually a better weapon than the flaming arrows. In ancient time, Greeks need to fight against the Romans. Since the Romans are familiar with framing arrows, burning mirror is a great weapon for Greeks to use. When they are using burning mirror, it will suddenly explore and attack the enemy, so it can cause a surprising effect and lead to the result of winning the battle. To say it differently, burning mirror is actually a extremely effective weapon for the ancient Greeks to use.
