Burning Mirrors

Essay topics:

Burning Mirrors

The article states that the story of Greek navy using burning mirror to defeat Roman navy is just a myth and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the idea of such thing being a myth is unconvincing and refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading states that the ancient Greek were not technologically advanced enough to build burning mirrors. The professor refutes this point by stating that not as much technology is needed to build those mirrors as we expect it is. For example, they needed copper wood as a material for work which was already available. Also, they could easily build such big mirrors by assembling many small ones.

Second, the article claims that the burning mirror would have taken a long time to set the ships on fire. However, the professor contends that they had the material needed to set fire in a second rather than taking ten minutes if they had to use only wood. This could have been done by using pitch which helps setting fire quickly.

Third, the reading amends that a burning mirror does not seem like an improvement on a weapon that the Greeks already had: flaming arrows. The lecture opposes this point by saying that there is actually some benefits in using burning mirrors in comparison with using simple flaming arrows. She states that when an army is using burning mirrors their enemy is only able to see the mirror, nothing more where as the fire could be seen if they had used flaming arrows. So using burning mirrors is more affective because it suddenly sets the fire and surprises the enemy.
