The cane toad is a large (1.8kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers’ crops by eating harmful insects.
Unfortunately, the toad multiplied rapidly, and a large cane toad population now threatens small native animals that are not pests. Several measures have been proposed to stop the spread of the cane toad in Australia.
One way to prevent the spread of the load would be to build a national fence. A fence that blocks the advance of the toads will prevent them from moving into those parts of Australia that they
have not yet colonized. This approach has been used before: a national fence was erected in the early part of the twentieth century to prevent the spread of rabbits, another animal species that was introduced in Australia from abroad and had a harmful impact on its native ecosystems.
Second, the toads could be captured and destroyed by volunteers. Cane toads can easily be caught in simple traps and can even be captured by hand. Young toads and cane toad eggs are even easier to gather and destroy, since they are restricted to the water. If the Australian government were to organize a campaign among Australian citizens to join forces to destroy the toads, the collective effort might stop the toad from spreading.
Third, researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations. This virus will be specially designed: although it will be able to infect a number of reptile and amphibian species, it will not harm most of the infected species; it will specially harm only the cane toads. The virus will control the population of cane toads by preventing them from maturing and reproducing.
Both the Lecture and the reading passage are discussing the measures taken by Australia to stop the spread of the cane toad. The former is of opinion that their are many flaws in he proposed methods. While the latter provides three reasons in support of it.
To begin with, the first issue we encounter is associated with the construction of a national fence. The professor highlights that it won't be easy as this may cause unwanted environmental damage. Additionally, eggs of cane toad were usually found in streaming water and travel from one place to another. So, there was a possibility that some may travel to other side and multiply there. On the other hand, the text posits that it is very effective as this approach was also used by the Australia in past to prevent spread of rabbits.
Moreover, another topic of debate revolves around destruction by volunteers. The speaker points out that it could be successful but untrained volunteers may destroys the native frogs. Furthermore, this may cause a major harm to useful frog species. However, the author mentions that young toads and toad cane eggs are easy to gather and destroy and don't need any training.
Thirdly, the final point of discussion is connected with development of disease causing virus. The lecture claims that it is a bad idea and have terrible consequences for original habitat especially in America. To add on, when pet collectors may take any infected toad cane and it reach to America. It may destroys the native species. Nevertheless, the passage states that it will be specially designed and will not harm most of the infected species other than toad cane.
To conclude, it is quite visible that the author and the lecturer had conflicting views about controlling toad cane species in Australia. They are having trouble in finding common grounds on this issue.
