Essay topics:

Car manufacturers and governments have been eagerly seeking a replacement for the automobile's main source of power, the internal-combustion engine

The reading and the lecture are both about the hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine. The author mentions three main benefits of this new technology. The professor from the listening passage disagrees with the author's points. She thinks that even though the article is correct, it is way more optimistic. The professor also adds that this new technology would not solve the problems as the author mentions that it will be.

First of all, according to the author since the hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine relies on water and natural gas, this source's availability in nature is unlike the oil: it is unlimited. The professor, however, casts doubt on this by saying although the main sources of this technology are unlimited, the processing and the technical requirements of this technology is extremely difficult. The requirement of an eligible temperature, for instance, is minis 200 Celcius degreess.

Secondly, the writer mentions that hydrogen-based fuel cells can reduce air pollution since it does not pollute air like the oil. The professor, on the other hand, says that it is true that using this technology would not cause any pollution, however, producing of it will definitely create greenhouse gases. She continues by adding that the factories and the purification process without any doubts will result in air pollution.

Lastly, the reading claims that cars that will use this new fuel will be more efficient and it will compete with the current car fuel's economically. The reading also mentions that overall this new fuel will be more budget-friendly. On the contrary, the lecturer thinks that since the metals which need to be used for this new fuel are highly expensive overall, this new innovation would be more costly than today's fuel. She also adds that replacing these expensive metals with their cheap versions is not possible.

Overall, the professor definitely has many doubts about the point which made by the author on the topic of hydrogen-based fuel.
