The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about carved stone balls, artifact found in different areas of Scotland. The author of the lecture, by providing three theories, states the purpose of stone balls, which dated to Neolithic time around 4000 years ago. However, the lecturer says that none of the theories are convincing for the following reasons.
First of all, the writer of the text brings about that these carved stone balls were used as weapons in hunting, because they have holes in them and could be used as weapons. On the other hand, the professor rejects this idea and posits that common Neolithic weapons like hand axes were different. Some of these carved stone balls are cracked while their surface preserved in good conditions. Hence, these stone balls were not used as weapons and there is no sign of use on them.
Second of all, the writer of the passage puts forward that these carved stone balls were used as weights and measure systems, since they are uniform in size. The speaker, on the contrary, refutes this notion and expresses that these carved stone balls are uniform in size but have different mass. They have different type like sand or stone. Moreover, they have same size but different weights. So, they can't be used as weights systems.
First of all, the author of the article puts forth that carved stone balls had a special social purpose and meaning. Conversely, the lecturer rebuts this also and declares that it is unlikely because they do not have intricate patterns and they are simple to be social status. Also, there were none in graves of died Britains, whom buried with possessions and had high social statuses.
