comics
The reading and the lecture are both about the origins of the comics medium, which is different for them. The author of the reading believes that the comics are a genuine American art form. The lecturer cast doubts on the claims made in the article; he thinks that the creation of comics is not Americans; however, it belongs to the whole world.
First, the author points out that the first comic strip, Hogan's Alley, was created by an American in the 1890s. He mentioned that this comic is American in all sense; they have the typical American life in a low-income neighborhood in one of the most iconic cities of USA, New York. However, this point is challenged by the lecturer; he says that the cartoonist was indeed a European immigrant. As well, most of the characters of the comics are immigrants too.
Secondly, the writer claims that an American created the first comic book. The article notes that Superman the first superhero was American-created. But, the lecturer refutes this argument. He suggests that Superman was not American-created. He elaborates on this by mentioning that the drawer was Canadian actually. Also, he says that Superman was not the first comic books published because that was Tintin, a Belgium comic.
Finally, the author contends that Americans inspired the comics medium in Japan. The article established that Japanese comics were created after Worl War II by the influence of the comics that soldiers brought to Japan. The lecturer, on the other hand, asserts that traditional ancients arts inspired mangas and not American comics. In the same way, the author states that Americans influenced European comics. He affirms that the Disney comic Smurf and Asterix is very popular in Europe. By contrast, the lecturer says that even if that is true, Smurf and Asterix were European-created. They were just acquired by Disney after.
In conclusion, the lecture and the reading are both about the origins and influence of the comics medium. However, while the author says that comics are innovative American arts, the lecturer states that there is not a unique origin of the comics medium.
