Communal online encyclopedia problems

Essay topics:

Communal online encyclopedia problems

The article states that online communal encyclopedias have important problems, and provides three supporting reasons. However, the professor says that article's judgment is a result of ignorance and how far the online encyclopedias have come. She refutes each of the reading's reasons.
Fist, the article proposes the lack of academic credentials as a possible problem. The professor opposes this point by stating that traditional encyclopedias are not completely accurate either. In fact, it is not possible to find an encyclopedia without errors online or offline. She says it is easier to correct errors in online encyclopedias. She adds that errors in traditional encyclopedias may remain for decades.
Second, the article states that online encyclopedias may contain fabricated or corrupt information due to the hackers or vandals. However, the professor refutes this point by explaining that online encyclopedias present crucial facts in the read-only format which cannot be changed by users. They also get the advantage of experts who monitor the changes in online contents and eliminate the wrong ones.
Third, the article states that online encyclopedias do not tend to focus on important subjects. The professor rejects this point. She explains that traditional encyclopedias have space problems so a group of experts decides on what materials should be included. Therefore, traditional encyclopedias do not show the great range of people's interests. On the other hand, online encyclopedias do not have the space problem. Thus, they cover academic articles and also articles on other interesting subjects for people. In fact, this is an advantage of online encyclopedias that they show the diversity of users' interests.
