Essay topics:

The critics about the accuracy of the memoirs of the book of Chevalier de Seingalt

The passage and the lecture are both about the accuracy of the memoirs that Chevalier de Seingalt wrote about his life and adventures. The lecture gives three reasons because critics has raised doubts about their veracity, instead the professor in the lecture gives arguments which imply that what Chevalier wrote are true, or at least the arguments of the critics are not absolute.

So, the first doubt of the critics is why Chevalier had to borrow money from a Swiss merchant, if it is true that he was very wealthy? They say this has no logic. But the professor in the lecture says that this can be possible, because there are some cases when he sold the home and were waiting for money that was necessary for him to lawn until he got paid.

The second argument the critics are skeptical, is the accuracy of the conversation between him and Voltaire. They do not doubt about their relationship, but for them it's impossible to remember every single conversation. But the professor in the lecture says that it is possible, because there are evidences that Chevalier used to take notes every night after those conversations, notes that he then used when he wrote the book.

The third reason the critics use to doubt about the veracity of the stories Chevalier wrote in his book, is why he did not escape from the prison asking his friend from Venice to help, but he had to use a piece of metal to make a hole in the ceiling of the room of the prison. Instead, the professor claims that after Chevalier was gone, they had to repair the ceiling of the room. Why would it be necessary if it wasn't like he wrote?
