damage that forests take due to the forest fire
The lecturer and the passage are both about a way of dealing with damage that forests take due to the forest fire in the northwestern United States which is named salvage logging. The author of the passage provides reasons to illustrate the benefits of this method. In contrast, the lecturer contradicts various viewpoints mentioned in the passage based on three reasons.
To begin with, the author mentions that dead trees which remained from the fire would take years to decompose and through this period new trees could not grow. He believes that salvage logging could help the forest to recover itself immediately. On the other hand, the lecturer bring out the fact that removing roots could affect soil so that soil nutrients would be decreased.
In addition, the passage cast doubt that dead trees could become a new settlement for insects which is dangerous to the forest and they could affect healthy trees too. The lecturer refuses this point and mentions that dead trees are not only a new place for insects they also could be habitats for useful insects and birds which have a better influence on the forest ecosystem in the long term.
In the end, the author believes that through the salvage logging method, governments could cover part of the economic effects that forest burning causes. he added that this method needs more workers in contrast with traditional methods and it helps the governments to prosper new jobs. However, the lecturer rejected this idea and mentioned that this method needs types of equipment which are expensive to buy and maintain like helicopters.
