The main idea of both the passage and the lecture is about the theory of bees and a special structure dates back to 200 million years ago. With this in mind, the passage casts doubt on the accuracy of this supposition and mentions that these structures cannot be related to the bees. The lecturer, on the other hand, categorically denies all the three episodes of arguments mentioned in the passage, believing that the structures perfectly prove the theories about bees and the arguments of the passage are not convincing at all.
First, both the text and the talk discuss the idea of fossils of actual bees being presented. In this line of thought, the author states that there is no remnants of bees which can be dated back to 200 million years ago. Conversely, the lecturer asserts that there exists another reason for the absence of actual bees. Accordingly, the professor maintains that bees can be fossilized in the trees which secretes a special kind of substance-risin- which is a sticky chemical substance. These kinds of trees might have been rare in those period of time and have become more common later. Thus it can be conclusive that the reason laid behind the fact that there is no remains of actual bees is pertinent to the idea that there was no trees with risin.
Second, both the passage and the lecture put forth the idea of flowering plants. In this regard, the passage explains that bees and flowering plants have evolved closely; however, there is no evidence of flowering plants in 200 million years ago. The lecturer, on the contrary, mentions that bees were existed before flowering plants. In this vein, he further adds that there were no flowering plants at that time and bees used to use other plants like ferns or pine trees. As soon as the flowering plants evolved, the bees had adapted themselves to them.
Third, both the reading and the listening materials are about some details of the structure. In this regard, the passage states that the structure lack some details like caps which have spiral pattern. However, the lecturer opposes this notion, citing that modern bees defend their nest by a chemical substance that is waterproof. When the scientists analyzed the chemical composition of the structure, they have found out that it was the same substance and composition used by bees in that structure.
