The reading and the lecture are both about the massive appartements which located in Chaco Canyon. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the author presents three theories about what are the reasons for building such a large houses with a lot of rooms with many floors. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that unfortunately these evidences are not covincing.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states these houses were used as homes for living and can contain many people inside it. The article mentions that these houes look similar to many houses in New Mexico and other places. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the design of the houses from the outside can support the theory but, from inside in make doubts about it because hundred of people need many fire places fpr cooking their food. Additionally, he points out that each house has locations for cooking foods only for ten families which can be hard to make it sufficent for all these people.
Secondly, the author suggests it is possible that citizens used it to preserve their food such as grain maze. In the article it is said that this ty[e of food acn be storaged for long period of time. Again, the professor specifically addresses this point when he states there were no evidences for this type of work in this city because the containers inside the rooms are empty.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that these house were a center for their occasions and events inside the city because there were many mounds inside the rooms and contain remaints for some food. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that there are other materials fond inside the mounds which contain construction matrials for buildings. He notes that the remains of the food inside the pots can be assumed for the workers.
