The emperor Claudius of Rome ruled an empire spanning three continents between 41 and 54 CE. His reign was of massive importance to the history of ancient European civilization. In fact, the emperor was among the most innovative, fair, and wise in all Rom

The text and the lecture provide opposite viewpoints regarding the works of Emperor Claudius of Rome. On the one hand, the text states that he was innovative, fair, wise and has a lot of wisdom, but on the other hand, the professor states that he was a bad judge and has done many notorious acts. The lecture also denies the notion that Claudius must be praised for his works.

To begin with, although the text states that Claudius was wise, innovative and has built the Roman harbor, the professor states that all this has happened after the assassination of the previous ruler. Moreover, his works lead to the outburst of the Civil war in Rome. So, the belief that Claudius was a good person, as per the text, is refuted by the professor.

Moreover, Claudius was considered as a bad judge according to the lecture. He doesn't listen to both the sides of the argument most of the times. What's more, he often encouraged the execution of people just for amusement. These points overshadow the claims made in the reading - he was a gifted with strong judgment. Thus, the text and the recording offer two contrasting views about the judgmental abilities of Claudius.

Finally, the professor also denies the reading that Claudius has a lot of wisdom. While the text states that he offered slaves many opportunities in politics to grow, the professor refutes this statement and claims that these slaves are mostly corrupt as they accepted bribes. The professor also states that Claudius's last wife has killed him by using poison in the mushroom. Furthermore, his son was a terrible ruler, the worst leader and must not be considered to be made as an heir according to the lecture. These statements contradict the ideas made in the reading that Claudius should be praised as he encouraged women and slaves.
