Essay Summarize the points made in the lecture being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage has been updated.
Both the passage and the lecture deals with the question whether if a destructive meteor cause the extinction of the dinosaurs. While the passage clearly states that it was caused by a meteor which we also found evidence of, the lecturer argues the points made in the passage and reaches a different conclusion in each case.
Firstly, the article mentions the huge size of the meteor’s crater in Yucatan Peninsula which demonstrates how much destruction it brought to the earth. According to the passage, the meteor caused enormous tidal waves which displaced the continents. However, the lecturer calls this argument into question by saying that, in fact, the meteor was not big enough to be responsible for such disastrous outcomes. Additionally, he claims that the depicted size of the crater is inaccurate.
Secondly, the passage indicates that sediment layers allow us to figure out that there must have been a lot of dust that was released to the atmosphere due to the meteor which then ruined multiple ecosystems on earth. In contrast, the lecturer asserts that fossil records show that the dust in the atmosphere during that time was created by volcanic ash that was released to the air after a volcanic eruption.
Finally, the lecturer opposes the author’s argument about the foreign celestial bodies that hit our planet by claiming that these meteors are extremely rare. Therefore they do not pose a significant threat for our species, while volcanic eruptions are the main reason for horrible occurrences.
