Ethanol fuel made from plants such as corn
The reading paragraph and listening are both about whether ethanol fuel can be a good alternative to gasoline or not. Although some people supports ethanol to be a good replacement for gasoline, the author of the article doesnot think so and provides three reasons supporting his point. The lecturer on the other hand opposes the author.
Firstly, the author of the passage believes that the increased use of ethanol will not help in solving global warming rather will contribute to it by releasing carbon di oxide, a greenhouse gas, while ethanol will be burned for fuel. The lecturer opposes this statement by claiming that, ethanol may produse carbonn di oxide but it will not increase the amount of carbon di oxide in the atmosphere as ehanol is made from plants and if ethanol were to produce in large number, trees will be planted in number and these planted trees will help absorb the carbon di oxide produced by ethanol.
Secondly, the author claims that the production of ethanol will drastically reduce the amount of plants which we use except for fuel. He presented an instance of corn which is fed to farm animals. According to the author it is estimated that, the loss of corn due to production of ethanol will be much higher than the need that will be fullfilled by ethanol. As a result, a substantial source of food for animal will vanish. But the lecturer deter this idea by saying that, animals eat a particular part of plant which is not needed for ethanol production and the part that is needed for ethanol production is not eaten by the naimals. So, production of ethanol will not affect the food supply of animals.
Finally, the article says that, though the prices of gasoline and ethanol are same today, it will be different in no time. The price of ethanol is same as gasoline because United States of government help ethanol producers in the form of tax subsidies. Once the government stops helping the producers, t he price of ethanol will increase greatly. The lecturer however opposes the idea by claiming that if more people leans toward ethanol consuming then production of ethanol will increase and if production increases, the price of ethanol will drop even if the government doesnot help the ethanol producers any further. As availability of a product is inversely proportional to its price. The lecurer also presented a data which claims that if the ethanol production increases three times, the price will reduce by forty percent.
