Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline for several reasons.
First, the increased use of ethanol fuel would not help to solve one of the biggest environmental problems caused by gasoline use: global warming. Like gasoline, ethanol releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when it is burned for fuel and carbon dioxide is greenhouse gas: it helps trap heat in the atmosphere. Thus, ethanol offers no environmental advantage over gasoline.
Second, the production of significant amounts of ethanol would dramatically reduce the amount of plants available for uses other than fuel. For example, much of the corn now grown in the United States is used to feed farm animals such as cows and chickens. It is estimated that if ethanol were used to satisfy just 10 percent of the fuel needs in the United States, more than 60 percent of the corn currently grown in the united stated would have to be used to produce ethanol. If most of the corn were used to produce ethanol, a substantial source of food for animals would disappear.
Third, ethanol fuel will never be able to compete with gasoline on price. Although the prices of ethanol and gasoline for the consumer are currently about the same, this is only because of the help in the form of tax subsidies given to ethanol producers by the United States government. These tax subsidies have cost the United States government over $11 billion in the past 30 years. If the United States government were to stop helping producers in this way, the price of ethanol would increase greatly.
The lecture and the reading are both about the ethanol fuel as good replacement of the gasoline fuel. Whereas the reading claims that ethanol cannot replace gasoline due to three compelling reasons, the lecturer says that it would be possible that ethanol can replace gasoline as fuel alternative. The lecturer casts doubt on the main reasons that made in the passage and provides three reasons bolsters his claim.
First of all, according to the article, ethanol produces as much as environmental pollution as gasoline does as it also produce carbon dioxide when burnt as gasoline. However, the lecturer refutes the claim. although he concedes that it will produce the carbon dioxide on burning, unlike gasoline it consumes it effectively; most of the ethanol is produced by the use of plants and as plant use it during its growth for nutrition purpose, it will definitely balance the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. Thus, the argument of the lecturer does not hold water.
Secondly, claims of the passage suggests that use of plant available can increase the food problem for the animals like cows and chickens. even production of ten percent of the ethanol can consume 60 % of the total feed of these animals. Nevertheless, the lecturer dismisses the claim. he argues that even it use plant material it uses cellulose for - a material which is present in the plant but not digestive to animals , for ethanol production. so, its production has no effect on the feed problem of the animals.
Lastly, the reading points out that its price may not be competitive with the gasoline and emphasizes that its price is similar to price of the gasoline only by the subsidy of the government; otherwise, it has no level to compete with the gasoline in terms of the price. On the other hand, the lecturer suggests that the price of the ethanol can compete with gasoline in the future. he feels that once people will use the considerable amount of the ethanol consumption, more producer will increase and consequently, drop of the price due to more supply. This reasons also negates the view of the passage.
