expedition of Robert Peary

Essay topics:

expedition of Robert Peary

The reading states three main evidence that Robert Peary did reached the North pole in 37 days as he claimed. However, the lecturer disagrees with this and finds these points not comprehensive and untrue.

First of all, the author asserts that the National Geographic Society formed a committee that investigated Peary's records and declared he reached the North Pole. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges this by explaining that the committee were not objective. Most of the people chosen to investigate were Peary's friends that donated money to his expedition. Plus, the investigation only took two days.

Secondly, the reading states that another recent expedition made by Tom Avery was done in less than 37 days. As a matter of fact, Avery used the same dogsled and same number and breeds of dogs. In contrast, the lecturer disputes this by mentioning that although Avery's dogsled were similar, he did not carry as much weight as his food was dropped for him on his way and he did not have to carry it like Peary. Plus, he makes the trek while the weather was much better.

Finally, the reading mentions that Peary took photos of himself on the North Pole. By measuring the shadows in those photographs and calculating the Sun's position in that day, they could prove that he was on the Pole and the measurements were correct. Nevertheless, the lecturer explains that this is not true since the photos were faded and the exact length of shadows could not be measured using those photos. Plus, the camera was a primitive one and it did not take exact photographs.
