Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out
to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have
reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity.
Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did in fact reach the North
Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary's claim.
Robert E. Peary, a well-known explorer, claimed to have reached the North Pole in a 1909 expedition. A passage thinks that he did indeed came across the place because of a committee’s declaration, the short time Tom Avery used to complete the same journey, and measurements of the shadow . A lecture, however, deems these ideas to be unconvincing.
To begin with, the committee’s declaration that Peary did in fact reach the place doesn’t prove anything. Though it is true that they concluded accounts to be consistent and persuasive, the committee, made up of a lot of Peary’s friends, wasn’t very objective. Plus, the investigation lasted only for two days, meaning that the committee didn’t examine his records accurately. Therefore, the committee’s declaration couldn’t prove that Peary reached the North Pole.
Furthermore, the short time Avery used to complete the same journey couldn’t show that Peary reached the North Pole. Although Avery used the same sled, dog breed, and number of dogs, the lecture states that the two expeditions are actually very different. For instance, Avery carried much less weight because he dropped all his food along the way by airplane, and he was faced with more favorable conditions compared with Peary. Thus, the short time Avery used has no link with Peary reaching the North Pole.
Lastly, the measurements of the shadow aren’t evidence that Peary reached the North Pole. Despite that the photographed sun’s position corresponds with the one on the North Pole that day, the photographs, appearing fuzzy, were taken using old equipment a long time ago. They are also blurred and unclear through old age. Hence, this has nothing to do with Peary reaching the North Pole.
