forest fires in Yellowstone "let it burn" policy
The reading and the lecture talk about the policy of forest fire. The passage expresses that the “let it burn” policy causes huge damage, but the lecture disagrees with it and thinks the forest fire does not only do damage but also creative.
First, the passage mentions that due to the huge scale of the fire, the park’s trees and vegetation was damaged tremendously. However the professor says it can increase the diversity. The area colonized by trees now has an opportunity to smaller plants, which it can’t grows due to the shade of trees.
Second, the reading indicates wild life was affected as well. The lecturer proposed the population has recovered. For addition, the fire also creates an ideal habitat to new animals such as rabbits and squirrels. While the flourish of these bottom animals in food chain, the predators also grows as well.
Last but not least, the reading appeals the fire will decrease the amount of tourists, which affects the economy. Once again, the woman challenges the statement by the rarity of Yellowstone fire, which do not occurs every year. For another word, the tourists will come back next year and each year after that. So it do not cause much damage in economy.
To conclude, the “let it burn” policy causes a lot of damage apparently, but the fire is the natural circle and it recreates the ecology after that.
