four day work week

Essay topics:

four day work week

The lecture casts doubt on the arguments provided in the passage which is in favour of a 4 day work week. The lecturer challenges each of the argument presented in the passage with strong and thoughtful counter-arguments.

Firstly, the passage states that company would make more profit if employees are given four day work week option. However, the lecturer challenges the argument by giving his own set of arguments. He states that if companies hire more people, they would have to spend more. His critique is that more people would imply that the company spends more on training and the medical benefits that company gives to its employee. It would also mean that the company would need more office space and office setups such as computers for the work. This would put an additional burden on the company's balance sheet thereby hampering their overall profits.

Secondly, he also challenges the passage view on increased employment with four day work week. The passage says that for the company to get the work done they would have to hire more employees which would reduce the unemployment in the country. In contrast to this argument the lecturer says that if employees are hired for four day work week, the companies might start push them to their limits to do the same amount of work they did previously. That would imply that employees are exhausted more and no more jobs are created.

Thirdly, the passage says that a four day work week would give people an opportunity to improve their personal lives. They can spend more time with their family and on their personal interests during the rest of the week. However, that argument is also thrashed by the lecturer by giving the argument that four day work week can put them at risk and hamper their job stability since the companies would be willing to hire someone who wants to work five day a week for them. This can also hamper their promotion chances since the management is more likely to favour someone who is willing to work more for the company.

Due to all these counter-arguments the lecturer casts doubt on the proposal of four day work week.
