The reading and the lecture are both about solutions that can be applied to protect birds from flying into glass windows. The author of reading presents three possible solutions to solve such a problem. The lecturer, however, challenges these suggestions made by the author. He is of opinion that none of these explanations in the reading are convincing.
To begin with, the author of reading states that one-way glass, which is transparent from inside to outside of the building, that can be utilized to prevent birds from flying into the window. He argues that birds will consider these glass as a barrier solid, so it can help to prevent birds fly through it.
The instructor casts doubt on this theory. He points out that one-way glass behaves just like a mirror which means that they could probably reflect things like sky or tree in a mirror. As a result, birds would think these reflections are real, and they will fly right into them.
Secondly, the writer suggests another solution which is the colorful design. He mentions that if the window could be painted by colorful lines over the glass, people inside the building would see through the window and birds will avoid trying to fly through it.
The professor, however, rebuts this by mentioning that birds will recognize these unpainted lines as open holes. Accordingly, they might try to fly through them. Additionally, he points out that, to prevent this problem, the holds need to design tiny, which will lead to reduce the light in the building and affect people who are living inside them.
Finally, the author feels that the artificial magnetic could be an effective solution for this problem. He asserts that birds can sense Earth's magnetic fields which guide them to fly in the right direction.
In contrast, the speaker's position is that the ability to sense Earth's magnetic only helps birds navigate in the long-distance such as in migrating trips. Moreover, he notes that, in the short distance, birds use their eyes and brightness of the light to determine where to go. Thus, artificial magnetic won't have much effect.
