The reading and the lecture are both about the sources of the quackers sounds that Russian's sailors have heard underwater from 1960s to 1980s. To begin with, the writer suggests that the odd noises were made by the orca whales to attract a male in the courtship ritual. He mentions that the Orcas's studies points out that the sound made by the calls of orca whales are similar to the quackers sounds. The lecturer rebuts this claim by mentioning that the orca whales live near by the water surface. However, the Russian submarines operates in deep of the ocean. As a result, the quackers sounds could not make by the orca whales.
Secondly, the passage points out that the sounds were made by giant squid. The professor, in contrast, feels that the quackers sound could not made by the squid because the quackers sound appeered from 1960s to 1980s, but the the squid have been detected long time before and even today. Therefore, the quackers sound should detected nowadays if they made by the giant squid.
Finally, the author mentions that the quackers sound probably made by the foreign submarines. The lecturer challenges this point by mentioning that the quackers sound was moving to fast and changing direction quickly. Moreover, with today technology, the are no engine submarine can behave such an advanced fast and silence. Thus it is impossible that the quackers sound are made by the submarines from other country
