Group thinking

Essay topics

The reading passage and the lecture are both about a way of decision making which involves collective thinking or as the lecturer referes to is - groupthinking. While we learn about several advantages of the groupthinking from the passage, the lecturer draws our attention to its drawbacks which were proved by a research and numerous examples from real life.

First of all, the author claims that such a method of decision making will lead to a broad exchange of knowledge and information. However, the lecturer shows how this assumption may be wrong according to some research that revealed that some individuals may conform without expressing their points of view. That happens mostly due to the pressure from the managers. As a result, individuals who do not agree and raised objections are ignored.

Secondly, the author provides us with another advantage which is a rise in motivation and morale. The lecturer, however, points out that group - thinking usually leads to the feeling of invulnerability. Teams think that since they have more members, they cannot be easily outsmarted. Consequently, they effectiveness and enthusiams vanish with time.

Finally, we learn from the passage that this way of decision making will result in the superior decision. However, the lecturer opposits this statement and mentions a telling example from the history of Ford. Group - thinking leads to reassurance, meaning that team members will simply try to justify the made decision and ignore it possible drawbacks. Ford marketing team's disastar is a compelling evidence of this statement.
