In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane. This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail. Laboratory experiments Experiments in the laboratory support the idea that cloud seeding is effective. Hail usually forms water vapor that is close to the freezing point However, when experimenters added silver iodide to cold water vapor in the laboratory, they often observed light snow forming instead of hail pellets. Evidence from Asia There is evidence about the effectiveness of cloud seeding from several countries around the world. In some Asian countries, for example, cloud seeding has been successfully used to control precipitation in urban areas. These positive results suggest that cloud seeding should also be effective in protecting fields and farms in the United States. Local studies A few local studies also support the value of cloud seeding. One study conducted in a farming region in the central United States, for example, directly monitored crop damage due to hail. The study found that in an area where cloud seeding was used there was reduced hail damage compared to previous years.

While the reading support the effectiveness of this process and explains by giving three supportive reasons. The lecture refutes this , saying that the effectiveness of this process is not clear and it opposes each and every reason stated by the writer.
First, the reading claims that according to a laboratory experiment using silver iodide with cold water lead to production of light snow instead of hail. However, the lecture argues that even if this experiment result is true, the silver iodide will prevent precipitation of hail, snow, and rain. Accordingly, the crops will be damaged from drought due to absence of rain instead of damaging from hail itself.
Second, the reading makes the argument that this process is actively used in Asia in urban are and indeed, will give same results if used in USA. The lecture counters this point by stating that this process can not repeated in USA since in cities are of Asia is full of air pollution which is favorable to cloud seeding. Furthermore, cloud seeding process is not favorable in non pollution area like in farmer region of USA.
lastly, the reading argues that due to local monitor in farming area of USA by using this process, they result in reduction of hail in this area in comparison to previous years that never used this method. On the other hand, the lecture refutes this claim by pointing out it is truly that hail will be reduced in certain area used this process but it still unhelpful in north, south, and east of this region. Apparently, that all area effected by hail reduction due to more locally natural variation like climate changes and not as a result of cloud seeding process.
