incomes

Essay topics:

incomes

The author of the reading claims imposing high taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy foods benefits everyone and provides three reasons to support. However, the lecturer refutes all the reasons made by the author and gives out three reasons why these are not true.

First of all, the author suggests that consumers of cigarettes and unhealthy foods by subjecting to high taxes, may buy fewer cigarets and this leads society to a healthier lifestyle. This statement is challenged by the lecturer. She holds an opposing view and points out that cunsumers of these stuffs in this situation are more likely to buy lower quality cigaretts with fewer price, so they will be in bigger problem than before.

Secondly, the writer contends that the equal rate of taxation for smokers and nonsmokers is not fair since smokers usually encounter with some sickness due to cigaretts and thetyproduce more burden for society. The lecture, however, rebuts this by mentioning that in this statement amount of incomes do not considered. Smokers who have lower income should pay the same rate of taxes that nonsmokers pay. Thus it is burden for smaller income.

Finally, it is stated in the article that higher tax rate on cigaretts and unhealthy foods raise government's revenue and this is good for all society. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that government does not want to lose the revenue made by high taxes on theae stuffs and will remove some policies regarding nonsmoking public areas, so society will not benefits from it.
