Th passage and the lecture addreses the topic of great houses of Chaco Canyon in New mexico. Several points have been made to identify the function these buildings served. The author of the passage presents three theories attempting to explain the purpose of these buildings. The lecturer on the other hand contends that these reasons arent compelling enough. The lecturer casts doubt on the passage by presenting points.
To begin with, the passage states that one possible function of these Chaco structures were as residential buildings similar to the apartment buildings at New Mexico. The lecturer however rebuts this claim by mentioning the number of fireplaces in the building. He states that if it were an apartment building , it would house 100 families but the number of fireplaces found in this building could only cater to 10 families.
The second possibility mentioned in the article is that the structures could have been granaries or stores to store surplus food materials, namely maize which was one of the major crops. The lectures points out that this statement doesn't have ay supporting evidence to be proven right because excavation hin that area has not found any remains or spilled maize in that area.
Finally, the passage depicts another possible use of the building as a ceremonial center because of the huge mound of old material consisting of broken pots that was formed. The author states that this could be due to the preparation of large amount of food during ceremonies after which the pots were discarded. The lecturer disproves this claim by bringing into light that there were several other construction materials found along with the pots such as sand , stone etc. He elaborates this by stating that this was merely a trash heap left by construction workers and hence isn't a good evidence.
In conclusion, the points presented in the lecture contradicts those made in the passage. Thus, according to the presented information the use of building in Chaco Canyon remains a disputable topic.
