The article and the lecture focus on eco-certification for wood American companies.
The author suggests that it is unlikely that these companies will be concerned about getting the eco-certificate. The lecture, however, rebuts this conclusion. He thinks that this certification will be beneficial to them.
The author begins by stating that this certification cannot be used as an advertisement to attract more clients. In the article it is mentioned that Americans are overwhelmed with advertisements, and, as result, do not pay attention to it. The lecturer challenges this specific statement by providing information that customers, especially ecologically minded, do really rely on information formed by independent agencies. Thus, this certification will have a positive effect as a means of marketing.
Secondly, the author points out that this certification will bring the prices up. And, taking into account that the focus of the citizens of the USA is just on the price aspect of the goods, the certified companies will lose market share. The lecturer, on the one hand, asserts that Americans do care about price, but, on the other hand, suggests that there will not be a significant difference between certified and noncertified goods. So customers who value the protection of the environment will opt for certified companies.
Finally, another reason why the author casts doubt about this certification is that American companies will not use it as an advantage in the foreign markets. This is because they do not really interested in selling goods abroad. The professor thinks that companies should concern not only with their abroad expansion but also with the coming of foreign rivals to the American market. Therefore, they should be ready to compete with companies that already have such certification.
