INtegrated essay from official guide to toefl test ETS. "Appearance of professors on television"
The reading passage informs about the different types of benefits gained if professors make guest appearances on television to give expert commentary on some of the events of the world. However, the lecturer in the recording strongly disagrees with this idea and clearly articulates herself and her reasons.
The first thing that she says to eradicate the foundation of the reading passage is that it is not good for the professor from a professional point of view to appear as a guest on a television program. The reason behind this is that if a professor comes on television, other scholars will think of him as a facetious candidate who is not serious in his works and assume that he is someone who prioritizes entertainment over actual research. Other scholars in the field might not invite him to various seminars and discussions and this results in the overall reduction in respect of the professor who made appearance on television.
In addition to that, the reading passage states that the university and the students benefit from the professor who appears on television programs. The lecturer in the recording disagrees with this statement by positing that the professor will waste a lot of his time by being on television. There are a number of things to be done- preparing content, rehearsing, commuting and looking good for the show. These tasks might use most of the time of the professor and this might result in the students being affected because the professor will not be able to give them the time they deserve to solve problems and clarify doubts.
And finally, as per the reading passage, the professor, by being on television, is beneficial to the public since they get to learn a lot of new stuff. But according to the lecturer in the recording, this is not the case since most of the television networks do not want any serious academic content on their channels but rather, only the academic titles to lure the public and increase overall revenue. The lecturer thinks that the material presented on the television channel will not be as informative as the author of the reading passage thinks. Other than that, the lecturer states that it does not have to be a professor to appear on television. Any person with a little bit of preparation can inform the public regarding the events of the world and all the social and historic importance that comes with it.
