whales use navigating techniques for migration and mating purpose.
Both the reading passage and the lecture are about the theories use by humpback whales to cover long distance for suvival. The author explains the different ways through which humpback whales use stars for navigation purpose. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on these theories, and states that the evidence provided by the author is not convincing.
Firstly, the author mentions that the whales have complex brains which are associted with intelligent. Moreover, this ability enable the whales to orient in the night sky. However, the lecturer refutes this point. He states that there is not real connection between intelligence and animals ability to navigate. Some birds like ducks have this ability but on average level, and their intelligence level is not very high. They are just born with such instincts. According to him, intelligence and navigation ability are two different things and not connected together.
Secondly, the author says that humpback whales depend on external cues like stars to move in straight lines. While the lecturer is not in favor of this theory. He argues that there might be different explanation of this because animals send external force or object to do this. Whales are bio magnetic which make the animal sensitive to orient with magnetic field.
Finally, the author states that the whales navigate by looking up at the stars, and they do this action by keeping their heads above from the water surface. This behaviour is called sky hopping. However, the lecturer mentions that sky hopping behaviour has nothing to do with the whales to look at the stars.Sharks exhibit this behaviour but they do not use it to migrate and look stars. They look for animals to haunt their prey. Therefore, the idea that the whales using sky hopping behaviour to look for stars is a pure speculation.
