Mandatory drinking age
The Author supports the idea of lowering the MDA in the U.S. from age of 21 to 18, while the speaker opposes this position by dismissing the Authors claims based upon responsibilities, statistic compartment to Europe and safer environment.
The Writers first argument is that young people of age 18 are legally by law recognized as an adult. They can buy cigarettes and go to the military. However, the Speaker infers that not only for buying alcohol is set mandatory age, but for gambling, adopting and owning a car also. If there are other ways, rather than buying and consuming alcohol, that can prove that person is adult, than there is no need to lower mandatory drinking age.
Not only responsibility but also statistic compared to Europe, are used by Writer as a reason for lowering the MDA. Young people in Europe can consume alcohol legally at age of 18 and Europe still has a lower decrease of traffic accidents than the U.S. N3ver would the Speaker supported such statement, remarking that the youth in Europe has been proven to be more intoxicated, which can lead to death. If the lowering the MDA can increase the death rate caused by alcohol consumption in adolescents, then this is not as good statistic as the Author claims.
If both responsibilities and the statistic are not convincing reasons to lower the MDA, the Essayist would replay upon that the young people, under the age of 21, are consuming alcohol regardless to the law in a house party's and in another unsafe environment. If they would be allowed to drink in bars, where adults are present, they would be safe from accidents. In this case, the Lecturer reveals that allowing underaged teens to drink in bars, discos, and restaurants, can motivate them to drink even more. So, if the low MDA would encourage them to drink more than the bars and discos are not as safe environment as the Essayist states.
Through contradictory arguments, the Speaker casts doubt on the validity of the Authors claims based on responsibility, statistic, and safe environment.
