The reading and the lecture are about the possibility of colonization of Venus by humans. The author of the reading asserts that it would be impractical to establish human colonies on the planet and provides supporting evidence for his view. Although, the lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that living on Venus would be Possible if suspending space stations are constructed a few kilometers above the Planet’s surface.
To begin with, the author argues that the pressure at the Venus’ surface is overwhelmingly high that no human or earthly instrument can endure it. The article mentions that it is about 90 times greater than the earth pressure. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that at the height that the floating stations are installed, the pressure is quite similar to the pressure exerted on the earth’s surface.
Secondly, the writer suggests that Venus atmosphere has not any oxygen and also on its surface no water reservoir has been identified. In the article, it is stated that oxygen and water have to be supplied from earth which would be impractical considering the amounts that is needed to be imported. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that in the stations, humans can use components in Venus’ atmosphere such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide to form water and oxygen through chemical reactions, thereby eliminating the earth travel suggestion.
Finally, the author posits that, Venus has highly packed clouds that do not allow the limited amount of sun rays penetrate the atmosphere and reach to the planet's surface. As a result, humans cannot implement solar energy to power their instruments. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that in the height that the hanging stations are mounted, clouds are generally thinner, so it is possible to absorb more sun rays. Also, as part of rays are reflected from clouds, solar panels could be installed in a way to absorb both direct and reflected sunlight, thus increasing the amount of captured energy.
