Both the passage and lecture discuss about possibility of human presence on Venus. The reading passage presents several reasons which make it impossible to maintain permanent human presence on that planet. On the contrary, the lecturer brings up the idea of making floating station rather than standing stations which can provide better opportunities to establish human presence on Venus.
To begin with, the author posits that atmospheric pressure at Venus' surface is too much to survive and and any spacecraft would be crushed by this extreme pressure at surface. In the contrary, the professor states that if human stations float 50 km above surface, pressure would be as much as human are used to in Earth and then there would be lesser probability of being crushed.
Secondly, the reading asserts that, there are no water sources on Venus' surface and it's atmosphere contains insignificant percentage of oxygen. In addition, the author mentions that as there is no pragmatic approach to ensure regular supply of resources like water and caffeine, it eliminates the possibility of establishing permanent station on Venus. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that it is possible to apply chemical process to produce water and oxygen from compounds available on Venus' atmosphere. Thus, it would not be needed to import water and oxygen from Earth and constant supply of these resources can be maintained artificially.
Finally, the author depicts that, due to presence of thick clouds in Venus' atmosphere, it reflects most of the sunlight while allowing negligible sunlight to reach the planet's surface. Furthermore, presence of dense carbon dioxide layer make this condition more critical as it blocks more light. Consequently, it would not be possible to generate electricity using solar cells in absence of light. The professor refutes the point by saying that if floating stations are used high above the clouds, those could get sunlight directly and also from reflected by carbon dioxide layer. Thus, it would help to produce electricity using solar powers and enhance the possibility of human presence on Venus.
