In the lecture, the professor makes a series of points that challenges all the theories presented in the reading passage. She states all the three theories may sound plausible but non of them could be a good reason for the mass extinction at the end of the Triassic period.
First of all, the passage claims decrease level of sea as a reason of mass extinction. However the professor refutes this theory by stating that it could not be a possibility. She states the coastal and shallow water decline can only make mass extinction if it happens sudden. As this decline happened during several million years ,all the living organism adapted to this gradual change and had not any impact on them.
Moreover, the professor challenges the theory of massive climate cooling due to volcanic activity. She states that it is true that sulfur dioxide reduces the temperature during short period of time but this volcanic excess sulfur dioxide was cleared out of atmosphere by combination with water from rain falls. Therefore , not many volcanic sulfur stay in the atmosphere.
Lastly, the speaker claims that scientist did not find any asteroid crater at that time and the one that was found was related to 12 million years before .So it could not be a good theory to explain the extinction.
