Online graduate degree program
The article states that online graduate degree programs are very different than the same programs in a traditional campus environment and provides three reasons to support his opinion. However, the professor in the lecture is against this idea and says that the main crux of an online degree program is similar to one offered on campus, and refutes every point made in the article.
Firstly, the reading states that online courses do not give a chance for students to interact with lecturers on an one-to-one basis. The professor believes that the point made by the author are flawed by saying that holding a discussion with the lecturer is the responsibility of a student and not the lecturer. He says that, even though a student cannot talk face to face, he can communicate via a different online medium such as email, messenger chat or even a telephonic discussion.
Secondly, the article says that many online programs are not as challenging and of high qulatiy as their on- campus counterparts. He goes on to say that, the students are able to complete the courses in a short span of time and the faculty teaching the courses are comparitively less experienced. However, the professor points out that an accredited course of a university has the same standards online as it has for an offline class. The professor gathered information of twenty courses in his university and made a finding that even though students expected the online course to be easier, they largely found the online course a greater challenge due to the extra need for time managemenent and handling the technology on top of the actual course content.
Lastly, the reading claims that top schools do not offer online degree programs and require their students to complete a more conventional program with most time on campus. The professor opposes this point by saying that every Ivy school except Princeton offeres online degress programs. And even Princeton offers online courses. He goes on to say that though some Ivy schools require one term of offline campus classes as a criteria for a student to graduate, many top schools do not have such a requirement and support a complete online program.
As you can see, the author and professor hold very different views on online graduate degree programs.
