Chevalier memoir
The author states that the events in the memoir are inaccurate and distorted by Chevalier to make his life seem more glamorous. However, the professor claims that the memoir is an accurate and reliable historical source and refutes each of the points made in the article.
Firstly, the article claims that Chevalier had borrowed considerable sums of money to spend on parties and gambling during his stay at Switzerland. The author says that he wouldn't have to borrow money if he was truly wealthy. However, the professor believes that there are flaws in the author's position by saying that borrowing money does not imply that one is poor. He goes on to say that wealth in the form of property can take time to liquidate to money and borrowing would be done during this stint.
Secondly, the passage posits that the accuracy of the conversations with the famous writer Voltaire is doubtful since it was documented many years after the conversations were held. The professor points out that Chevalier used to make notes every night and noted the meeting details on a daily basis. Moreover, this was confirmed by Chevalier's servant.
Lastly, the excerpt questions the account of Chevalier's escape from prison via a hole crafted in the ceiling. The author believes that the escape was made via a bribe through his well-connected friends in Venice. The professor opposes this point by saying that there were other prisoners present who had greater political connections than Chevalier and hence a bribe was not the case. He goes on to say that old prison documents mention a repair to the ceiling in Chevalier's prison cell after his escape which strengthens the memoirs genuineness.
As you can see, the author and professor have very different views on the authenticity of the events in Chevalier's memoir.
