Chevalier de Sengalt memoir. TPO8
The reading passage gives information about the famous writer chevalier de Seingalt who wrote a long memoir on the life incidents that happened to him. More specifically, in regards to the passage, the writer put forth the idea that chevalier memoirs have based on false information In the listening passage the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writer's claims.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states the false claim made by the chevalier that when he was in switzerland, he was very wealthy and he used to spend big amounts of money on parties and gambling. however, according to evidence chevalier took a loan from switchbacks. If he was really rich why did he take a loan from banks? The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees with that, she states that when chevalier was in switzerland he sold some his property so he can get money from it but that took some time, As a result, he borrowed some money from the bank until he got his money from sell.
Secondly, the author reading states another false claim by chevalier that chevalier wrote a memoir that he met voltaire that is true but he wrote that memoir after several years of meeting, so there is definitely some fake information in memory because it is not easy to remember conversation properly for so many years. Again the lecturer in the listening passage addresses a point when she states that after the night when chevalier met voltaire, he wrote down all his conversations in his notes and he kept these notes with him until he wrote a memoir on them.
Finally, the author brings up his last claim to close that the incident in the memoir of chevalier that tells when he was in jail in Venice italy he made a hole in the roof with help of a small piece of metal so can escape through it and he did Consequently evidence told that he escaped from jail because he had powerful friends in italy who helped him get out of the jail. Not surprisingly the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that there were so many other prisoners who also had very powerful friends so how can just chevalier get out of jail while others not ? she goes on to say that there is some evidence that claims that after chevalier succeed to get out of jail the police in jail reconstruct the roof in jail that made by chevalier.
To sum up, both the writer and the professor hold conflicting views about chevalier writing.
Its clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
