parasites

Essay topics:

parasites

In this passage is discussed the problems with yellow cedar declining in northwestern North America. The author mentions some problems that can cause this decline, while the lecturer points out that the reasons given cannot affect yellow cedar population.
In the reading the authors mentions insect parasites, the cedar bark beetle, that can cause yellow cedar population decline. However, the lecturer points out that beetles attack only damaged trees, because healthy yellow cedars are much more resistant against insects than other trees.
The second hypothetic cause of decreasing population of yellow cedars, according to the author, can be brown bears. That is because they eat yellow cedar bark, which contains sugar like wild berries and is a part of bears diet. The lecturer contradicts this hypothesis the fact that the population of trees decline not only on the mainland, but on islands as well, where are no bears. Thus, bears cannot be claimed as the main cause of population decline.
The authors third hypothetic reason of yellow cedar population reduction is about climate changes, which made roots more vulnerable and cause freezing of roots. That is because, climate changes made root system growing earlier in the late winter instead of early spring, which can cause them freezing in winter cold nights. About this hypothesis the lecturer mentions that the main decline of population is observed in warm low lands, while according to the authors hypothesis it must be contra versa. In fact, the lecturer mentions that the climate changes cannot be blamed in decline of yellow cedars population.
