Peary
tpo 28
Both the author and the lecturer discuss whether Peary reached to the North Pole or not. The passage claims that there are arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary's claim. The professor, on the other hand, completely rejects whatever mentioned in the reading through citing three reasons.
First, both the author and the professor talk about investigation of the National Geographic Society. According to the passage, the National Geographic Society examined the Peary's records and equipment and concluded that he reached the North Pole. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that the investigation of the National Geographic Society was not objective because the committee included some members who were close friends of Peary and they could not examine records carefully in two days.
Second of all, both the reading and the lecture discuss the time of journey. The author argues that Tom made the same trek in less than 37 days in the same condition experienced by Peary, so Peary's claims are not impossible. However, the professor refutes this, saying that food was delivered to them by airplane in unfavorable conditions and it is not possible to travel to the North Pole in less than 37 days.
Eventually, the passage and the lecture address the subject of evidences in the photographs. The passage goes on to mention that the shadow in the photograph makes it possible to calculate the Surf's position in the sun which shown that the Surf's position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. In contrast, the professor points out that shadows in the photograph cannot prove anything because Peary used primitive cameras and it is hard to be confident about the sun exact position.
All in all, the author confirms Peary's authenticity about reaching the North Pole, while the professor not only cast doubt on it, but he also demonstrates that these evidences are not convincing.
