problems due to zebra mussels and the possible solutions on these problems

In reading passage, writer state that, the problems due to zebra mussels as complicated. Zebra mussels coming from Russia and attack Americans can ecosystem balance and lead other species to extinction. However, in the lecture, the professor talks on the possible solutions on these problems.

To begin with, the reading mentions some consequences caused by zebra mussels. The mussels attach both bottoms of boats and water pipes bringing water to cities. As a result, they clog the pipes, costing a large amount of money to deal with. Besides, on account of flourishing very rapidly, the mussels often cover up the spawning grounds of various fish and other mussels. In order to solve these problems, the professor figures out a method of purifying ships. Specifically, the crew should clean the ships’ ballasts with water. Now that the mussels can stay alive out of water for a few days, the anchor chains and other parts out of water need cleaning as well. These can help eliminate the mussels effectively.

Secondly, the reading cites that zebra mussels have so few enemies that it is very hard to get rid of them. When the mussels are not killed, they will expand to all of America’s waterways, which make the problems worse. The professor, by contrast, states that there are some species of birds and fish preying on these mussels. Moreover, if the scientists can develop a way to develop the amount of these animals, the mussels will be limited their population. This is an Eco-friendly way to solve these problems so it needs developing in the future.
