Productivity and Rewards
The passage conveys the benefits of rewarding behavior in the workplace to motivate the employees and increase productivity. The lecturer mentions several points in disagreement to the ideas presented in the passage. He says that people do not like such productivity schemes based on distributing rewards. He argues that people like to be paid, instead of being handed incentives. They want respect for the work that they do. Another important point the lecturer mentions is that there have hardly been any conclusive studies to prove that reward based schemes work to increase the productivity of employees. He mentions that in fact, studies were conducted that proved otherwise. These studies found that rewards actually lowered the productivity of the employees instead of improving them. These reward based schemes to motivate people to work harder were actually counter-productive in the workplace.
He explains that people understand manipulation techniques, they know when they are being manipulated for working harder. People do not like to be manipulated by their companies for producing more work. Also, it is not guaranteed that they will always get their rewards. People who do not get rewards are disappointed, which feels like a punishment to them. Some employees may have invested themselves to work harder for the rewards. However, the higher the reward and their expectations, the more the disappointment they will have to suffer when they are not able to achieve it. This will lower their motivation and hamper productivity, completely overthrowing the purpose of establishing the reward scheme in the workplace.
Also, this could hinder collaborative efforts in the workplace, as employees may begin to conceal their problems from their supervisor to avoid negative ratings. They may feel that telling their supervisor about their problems in work may lead to the supervisor withholding their rewards.
In conclusion, the lecturer mentions several key points that show how rewards may not always increase productivity, and how they might even lower the productivity of employees in the workplace.
