Protection of Torreya taxifoha
Both the reading article and lecture discusses about the possible measures that can be adopted to protect declining population of Torreya taxifoha. Whilst the author suggests three effective measures, the speaker is at odds with authors claim. In her opinion, none of the suggested measures are likely to be efficacious for several reasons which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
The author, in the reading, beings my mentioning that maintaining the Torreya population in their suitable climate, typical cooler and damper microclimate of the northern part of Florida, would be very beneficial; however, the lecturer confutes the proposition made by author. She argues that reestablishment is highly unlikely to achieve the feat of success: the change in the climate of the larger region, specifically increase in temperature, is observed. She feels that the reason may be due to global warming and draining of wetland. Thus, the considered temperature cannot be maintained which falsifies the authors claim.
The writer further mentions another problem solution by migrating the Torreya plant sees to further norther part of Florida, since it was believed that such plant survived and thrived in the pervious time. The speaker challenges the position made by the writer by mentioning similar experiment done on Black Locus tree. She posits that when the particular tree was taken to the northern part, it embraced the environment and developed rapidly. As a result, the nearby plants, on the verge of extinction, were destroyed to a great extent. Thus, she feels the same happening of events with Torreya.
The reading article, finally, presents third possible solution: relocation of the Torreya seeds in the research centers. As opposed to the articles argument, the lecturer affirms that those seeds will not be able to withstand against the various diseases in those research centers. She maintains that such plants necessitate large seeds and genetically diversity in their forms which is not probable in the research centers. So, the implementation of the idea will fail.
To summarize, the writer and speaker both holds an opposite views on the possible protection measures for diminishing population of Torreya taxifoha which creates difficulty for both of them on finding common ground.
