The reading section and the listening section are both about the employees who are willing to work a four day a week and are willing to accept less pay in order to fulfill their requirements.
The author of the reading feels that there are possible explanation which are, employee will be prone to less error rate, less overworking will lead to increase in company’s profits, reduction in the employment rates, workload shifting will take place, extra time will be given to the family, employees will be able able to persuade their private interests and enjoy in their leisure activities. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.
To begin with, the author argues that less number of days will lead to increase in workers efficiency of work, less the error prone workers and will be able to work with the same rate, less costs to the company . This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer by claiming that as old employees are going to work for less time and paying them will be less, company has to employee fresh new employees to the company, so it will force the company to spend more on training and to the health benefits of the newly engaged employees. Additionally this results in more office space and more number of computers. Finally resulted in much more investment by the company.
Secondly the writer suggests that this will reduce the unemployment rates and also workload shift will distribute work to different employees. In the article, it is said that if many full time working employees started working for less number of hours, some of their workload should be shifted to other employees. The lecturer however, contradicts this by mentioning that many job will become available, other options to work overtime will open, as the workers were engaged to work for five days that amount of work to be complete will be expected to complete in four days. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that it will lead to incompletion of work and more unemployment.
Finally, the author states posits that employers will have extra time with their families. Moreover in the article it is stated that they employers will be able to pursue their private interests, and can enjoy for their leisure activities. The lecturer contradicts the position by stating that it will lead to reduction in the job stability. He notes that they will be the first one to lose their jobs during the economic downturn, also they may not qualify for their appreciation posts. For example if their is a vacancy for management position and company requires a five-day employer they might not get qualified for this job.
On the sum lecturer has provided every counter argument to the arguments in the reading passage.
