The author states that though the representation of the woman's face is very much like the portraits painted by Rembrandt but there are many problems with the painting and gives three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that after careful re-examination of the painting by experts it was proved that the portrait is indeed painted by Rembrandt and she refutes each of the authors' reasons.
First, the reading claims that there is inconsistency in the way the woman in the portrait is dressed. Pointing out that the woman is seen wearing a cap that is only worn by the servants while her coat has a luxurious fur collar which resembles a higher class. The professor refutes this point by saying that the pigment over the fur collar was topped 100 years after the painting was painted. According to the professor, it was done in order to increases the worth of the painting and give the woman a rich look.
Second, the author posits that though Rembrandt is a master of light and shadow, these elements in the painting do not fit together. The professor explains that if they see the original painting where the coat has a simple collar which is light in color. She also says that this lightly colored collar reflects light onto the face of the woman thus the portrait has shown no shadow on the face.
Third, the reading states that the painting was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together but Rembrandt is not known to use a panel glued together in this way. The professor opposed this point by explaining that the painting was originally painted in a single panel of wood like his other paintings. We also learn that in order to give it a grand look it was enlarged by gluing several pieces of wood panels.
