The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about several ways of reversing the trend that threatens lake's health. Considering this, the author claims that fortunately these ways exist and work. The professor, on the other hand, casts doubt on it and categorically denies whatever mentioned in the reading through refuting three possible ways by providing some reasons.

First of all, both the author and the professor talk about direct removal of salt from the lake's water. According to the passage, water of the lakes would be pumped into facilities and heat, so it will be evaporated. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects the author's viewpoint and illustrates the idea that maybe this method works, but it causes several problems which lead to health risks. She mentions that it can cause the increase in some toxic chemicals such as Selenium. Consequently, breathing in of people can be so dangerous, and it is terrible.

Second, both the reading and the lecture discuss the issue of diluting the salt level of the lake with water from the ocean. The passage goes on to mention that since ocean water is less salty, so adding it to the lake water can decrease the lake's salinity. Nonetheless, the lecturer supports a contradictory view as compared to that presented in the reading. She describes that as the passage mentioned this method needs canals and pipelines which are mostly expensive for transporting water in long distances. As a result, in some cases, governments do not have these resources for doing such a method

Eventually, the passage and the talk both address the subject of controlling the lake's salinity through constructing some walls. The author of the reading states that these walls divide the lake into several sections .However, the speaker refutes it, saying that this idea is unlikely to work for a long time since intense geological actions such as earthquakes can separate different sections. As a result, walls collapse with each other and , in some cases, water with high level of salinity mixes and comes back with lower salt level and so the density of salt increases in lower level one.
